Police say it’s remarkable no one was killed when a massive concrete slab collapsed at a demolition site in the Sydney CBD yesterday evening.

Three pedestrians received minor injuries when the collapse caused debris and scaffolding from the work site to blow out on to the footpath on Pitt Street just after 4pm.

More than 20 workers on the site, where the old Greater Union cinema stood, were lucky to escape unharmed, police said.

It is not yet known what caused the collapse but the Construction Forestry Mining and Energy Union says a worker was operating an excavator on the site when he felt the slab beneath him vibrate strangely.

“We had a worker operating a machine on a 20 metre by 20 metre slab, he felt some rumbles on the slab, he felt the slab was about to go,” CFMEU assistant state secretary Brian Parker said.

“The slab did eventually go and when it went he rode it down in the machine.

“He had enough time to brace himself which was lucky.”

Mr Parker called on state and federal governments to set up a taskforce to investigate worksite problems.

City Central local area commander, Superintendent Mick Fuller, said the timing and location of the accident meant that many more people could have been hurt.

“We’re very lucky that no one was killed,” Superintendent Fuller said.

The 24-year-old from Baulkham Hills, in Sydney’s northwest, handed himself into City Central police station yesterday afternoon.

He was charged with murdering Dang and is due to appear at Central Local Court this morning.

A number of men were involved in the fight, at the corner of Sussex and Goulburn streets, which left Mr Dang motionless on the footpath.

Police arrested three people at the scene, charging one with affray (not linked to Mr Dang’s injuries) and releasing the other two without charge.

The victim’s brother, Van Thoi Dang, joined police appeals to catch the person responsible, saying his brother had loved life and was a bit of a “smart arse” but not a violent man.

Richie was brought to Sydney for the re-opening of the MidCity shopping centre in the heart of the CBD.

But bringing a woman famous mainly for her friendship with Paris Hilton and engagement to rocker Joel Madden does not come cheap.

She was paid a fee of $200,000 plus first-class airfares valued at $72,000 for her, two-year-old Harlow, Harlow’s nanny and PR agent Nicole Perna.

Richie stayed in a suite at the Four Seasons Hotel on George St (value $36,000) and had a daily allowance. And she acquired $30,000 in clothing, accessories, watches, jewellery and sunglasses.

A security guard has died after being shot when four masked men ambushed an armoured van in Sydney’s CBD this morning.

The guard was one of a group that was ambushed outside a hotel at the corner of Sussex and Market Streets in central Sydney just before 6:00am (AEST).

It is understood four masked men in dark clothing got out of a silver Audi and demanded access to the armoured van. A fight broke out and the guard was shot in the chest.

The 59-year-old man from the Sutherland Shire in the city’s south was taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital at Camperdown in a critical condition, but later died.

The New South Wales police minister Michael Daley has condemned the attack.

“It’s all about cowardice if you are hiding behind an object and then spring out with a gun and surprise some poor fella who’s just doing his work,” he said.

“It was a cowardly attack on a bloke who was simply going about his daily business.”

Police said the guards were delivering cash to a motel complex. It is not known if any money was stolen but a guard’s handgun was taken.

Detective Acting Superintendent Greg Antonjuk says police are interviewing the other guards and examining security camera footage as part of the investigation.

“We have yet to review all of the CCTV and one can understand that security officers that were involved are very distressed about the circumstances,” he said.

“We are being very careful and sympathetic to their needs while still extracting information from them.”

Detectives said the silver Audi was last seen travelling south along Sussex Street.

Anyone who sees the car is urged to call 000 immediately.
